Join us for a morning of learning and networking with like-minded students at our remote Asia Savvy Symposium. Discover the importance of building cross-cultural knowledge and learn skills to succeed in a connected and culturally diverse world.

10.10 am Panel discussion: Showcasing success stories
Engage directly with people who have worked and lived across different cultures and gained valuable experience in their respective fields. Our panellists will offer valuable insights based on their own giving tips on personal skills, habits and strategies that helped them build the relevant competencies.

Learn about the ‘whats’, ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of cross-cultural competencies, giving examples on how to use these skills effectively.

Speaker bios:
Ziena Jalil, Independent director, strategic consultant, and diversity and inclusion advocate
Ziena is an award-winning business and public sector leader with nearly 20 years working in New Zealand and Asia, supporting the growth of New Zealand’s leading businesses. She works across the public, private and NGO sectors, in governance and strategy, marketing and business development, and communications and stakeholder engagement. Ziena is a Board member of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), Manukau Institute of Technology, Unitec, and the Cancer Society Auckland Northland. She was formerly Education New Zealand Regional Director (South & South East Asia), New Zealand Trade Commissioner to Singapore, and Head of North Asia Marketing and Communications for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.
Olivia Shen, Marketing Manager – Asia, Triumph & Disaster Ltd
Olivia Shen has been working as a cross-cultural professional in the last seven years, helping kiwi businesses to extend their international footprints to Asia through e-commerce and digital marketing. She has sales and marketing experience in finance, international trade, telecommunications, and food and beverage industries in New Zealand and China. These roles primarily focused on developing sales and marketing propositions to drive brand awareness, customer acquisition and commercial goals.
Jerry Clode, Founder, The Solution
Jerry, originally from Mataura in Southland, is considered a global expert in Chinese consumer and digital culture. He has helped many iconic brands gain their foothold in China including Disney, Budweiser, McDonald’s and Shell. Each year, he interviews hundreds of Chinese consumers in their homes or in places they shop and socialise. He is the Founder of The Solution, a leading-edge consultancy focused on helping businesses understand China and other emerging markets such as India, Brazil and Indonesia.
BoBae Wilson, Project Coordinator - Internships, Asia New Zealand Foundation
BoBae Wilson is from South Korea and moved to NZ 5 years ago. She has developed her professional career and project coordinator experience extensively in the Asian region. She is responsible for running the business internship programme at the Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono to develop the next generation of Asia savvy business leaders by facilitating internships in Asia for tertiary students and recent graduates. BoBae can speak Korean, Chinese and basic Japanese and has found the importance of cross-cultural competency in every day at work. BoBae had a double master’s degree in Development Policy in South Korea and Japan. She will introduce the Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono and how to nurture your cross-cultural skills with opportunities.
Antje Fiedler, Senior Lecturer, Graduate School of Management, University of Auckland Business School
Dr Antje Fiedler is Senior Lecturer in the Graduate School of Management (GSM) at The University of Auckland. Antje is teaching in the MBA and Business Master program at the Graduate School of Management. She has received the University of Auckland Business School Teaching Excellence awards for Collaboration in Teaching (in 2017) and Excellence in Executive Teaching (in 2019). Her research interests include growth and internationalisation of firms, with a focus on emerging Asia, and employment relations. Antje is a member of the New Zealand Asia Institute and the Director of the China Studies Centre of The University of Auckland. She is a member of the Academic Advisory Team of the Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence. Her work has been published in international journals, such as New Political Economy, Human Relations and the International Small Business Journal.
